What is organic Aquaculture?

Organic aquaculture is the farming of aquatic animals like shrimp, fishes, bivalves etc and aquatic plants without using antibiotics, chemicals, fertilizers and is produced by preserving the eco system and bio diversity.

What is meant by "Certified organic"?

"Certified Organic" assures that products were produced and/or processed under conditions required by National Standards and/or international standards for Organic Production.

What are all the standards available in certification of organic aquaculture?

Existing Public/National Regulations on Organic Aquaculture:
•European Union Organic Regulation 834/2007
•France (special part on shrimp)
•UK (only for finfish/salmonids)
•Denmark (only for finfish/salmonids)

Whether INDOCERT can issue organic aquaculture certificates based on the private labels?

No. INDOCERT can’t issue the certificates as per private labels. The certification based on the private labels is the sole responsibility of concerned private label organizations.INDOCERT will do the inspections of hatchery, feed mill, and individual farm, farmer groups, processing plants on behalf of private labels like Naturland, Bio Suisse etc…

Is INDOCERT accredited to issue organic aquaculture certificates?

Yes. INDOCERT is internationally accredited by Dakks, Germany as per EN 45011/ISO 65 for providing inspection & certification services according to rules equivalent to EC regulations 834/2007 for scopes such as Organic crop production, Organic Animal Husbandry, Organic Aquaculture, Organic Processing & Trade.

Can INDOCERT certify organic aquaculture products for export markets also?

Yes. INDOCERT can offer certification for export markets in Europe. INDOCERT is accredited by Dakks Germany as per EN 45011/ISO 65 to offer certification for European community as per rules equivalent to EC Regulation 834/2007.

What is EC Regulation for organic aquaculture certification?
a) On June 28, 2007, the EU adopted the new Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 on Organic production and labelling of organic products which will completely replace the Current regulation 2092/91. It came into force from January 2009.
b) The EU Organic Regulation (EEC 2092/91) will be replaced with a new regulation consisting of the three following parts:
− Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 - principles of organic farming and the legal framework for the implementing rules
− Commission Regulation (EC) No 889/2008 - implementing rules
− Commission Regulation (EC) No 1235/2008 - importing rules
c) For the first time the new EU Regulation (EC) No 834/ 2007 includes aquaculture products. Every operator that is already certified acc. to private label organic
standards (e.g.Naturland, Bio Suisse, Soil Association, Debio, etc.) has to request an additional obligatory inspection and certification acc. to the new EU
d) From Jan 2009 onwards all the consignment to EU should accompanied by a Certificate of inspection for the purpose of clearance from the EU ports as
e) Commission Regulation (EC) No 889/2008 - implementing rules was amended withdetailed production rule for aquaculture amended regulation EC No.710/2009 on August2009 and will be effect from July 2010.

What aquaculture areas does INDOCERT certify as Organic?

INDOCERT can certify any of the following areas as Organic:-
• Hatchery
• Individual growout farms
• Farmer groups
• Open water aquaculture operations like bivalve cultivation…
• organic Processing

What should I do to have my operation certified organic?

You may contact INDOCERT by phone/fax/email and an application package will be sent to you, including the procedures to be followed for inspection and certification process. You may also download application package from our website.

How long will it take for my land to be certified organic?

That depends on the history of your operation and your current compliances with certification standards and regulations. It takes six months to twenty four months depends on the farm conditions.

Will INDOCERT market the certified products of organic farmers?

No, INDOCERT does not market products.

What records are to be kept by the organic farmer under certification?

An organic farmer under certification must keep systematic records of all farm activities (stocking, daily operations, fertilization, feeding, and harvest, purchase, sales and processing) along with the supporting vouchers / bills

Is there any size/species specification for farms to be certified organic?

No, there are no limitations for land size and native species cultured etc…..

Can I produce the same product as organic and conventional simultaneously?

Simultaneous production of conventional, organic in conversion and/or organic aquaculture production and processing which cannot be clearly distinguished from each other, will not be allowed.
• There should be a conversion plan for the production area
• The last part of the area in the farm should be converted to organic production in the shortest possible period
• Appropriate measures must be taken by the operator for the separation of the products obtained from organic and non-organic units.
• The conversion plan proposed by the operator should be signed with an undertaking that he/she shall perform all the operations, will accept the sanctions enforced by the certification body.

Is it possible to certify “one paddy one fish culture system” as organic?

Yes. But your paddy crops also have to be under certification. Both paddy and fish crops has to be get certified and the conversion periods to be met as per the relevant standards.

In a poly culture system whether one species alone can be get certified?

Yes. But all the culture operations including other species have to be under organic management.

Can I use homeopathic treatment to treat my aquaculture stocks?

Organic standards allow the use of homeopathic treatment in the production of organic aquaculture.

How long is my organic certificate valid for?

Your organic certificate remains valid for one year. Organic certificate stands invalid in cases where you voluntarily surrender or your certification is suspended by the certification agency. Once you have entered the INDOCERT certification system, you must apply for annual inspection to maintain your certification status

What is the frequency of inspections?

Inspection is generally done once in a year. Additional inspections are conducted wherever found necessary

Does INDOCERT provide consultancy for organic farming?

Certification agency provides applicants with sufficient information to enable them to comply with the organic standards. But certification agency is prohibited from giving advice, or providing consultancy services to applicants or certified operations for the purpose of overcoming barriers to certification. In other words certification agents must explain the regulations but they cannot tell operators how to correct a noncompliance
